Dredd

Dredd Title Card

Dredd Still

“Negotiation’s over. Sentence is death.”

Hard to believe the budget was only $35MM, it doesn’t show, and one of the few films that didn’t have me balking at the use of 3D; the slo-mo drug scenes are beautiful, the action intense, the acting really solid — Olivia Thirlby is great in this.

The Dark Knight Rises

“Oh, you think darkness is your ally, but you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it.“

Nolan has always been idea over execution but he misses both marks with TDKR; the production value alone stops it from dropping too far and it’s still a spectacle, but empty and egregious in it’s use of convenient storytelling outs — it feels like a contractual obligation, which after reading about the behind the scenes of this sequel, sounds about right.

Spy Game

Spy Game Still

“If it comes down to you or them… send flowers.”

A thrilling film, real edge of your seat blockbuster type-stuff, while still staying relatively grounded (there’s one small explosion – it’s Tony Scott after al, but plenty of other tense set pieces), a great espionage film.

Flight

Flight Still

“See y’all on the dark side of the Moon.”

A portrait of addiction closer to reality than usual, and somewhat of a bait and switch since all the explosive action in the trailers happens in the first ten minutes, after which it evolves into a thrillingly dark character study whilst still remaining light thanks mostly to John Goodman’s brilliant drug dealer.

★★★✩✩

The Sting

The Sting Title Card

The Sting Still

“Glad to meet you, kid. You’re a real horse’s ass.”

A classic, every aspect is brilliant; The Sting is a Depression-era grifter movie, one of the best con movies thanks in no small part to the chemistry between Redford and Newman, a must watch.
