A Most Violent Year

A Most Violent Year Title Card

A Most Violent Year Still

“When it feels scary to jump, that is exactly when you jump, otherwise you end up staying in the same place your whole life, and that I can’t do.”

After only three films J C Chandor is already one of my favourite filmmakers:  his movies are subtle and complex, cinema for adults, beautifully composed, intelligently written, and perfectly cast — A Most Violent Year is no exception, a period-piece tour de force.

“Billy Hope knows how to take a punch, but he also drops bombs.”

Another day another Antoine Fuqua disappointment; this movie is saved by Jake Gyllenhaal who alone elevates it from ‘abominable shitshow’ to merely ‘a letdown’ — please stop giving Fuqua money.

Arbitrage

Arbitrage Still

“Nothing is beyond money for you, Robert. We both know that.”

A fine directorial debut, a solid, cold and well-acted film surely inspired by Madoff with an interesting open ending — will a ruthless but empathetic business magnate redeem himself with his family and ruin the sale of his company, or lose them but make bank and risk going to jail?

Reservoir Dogs

Reservoir Dogs Still

“Are you gonna bark all day little doggy, or are you gonna bite?”

Even though it was made in 1990, Tarantino’s first film looks and feels timeless, a classic and a show of things to come.

The Shining

The Shining Still

“Some places are like people: some shine and some don’t.”

Creepy, I don’t profess to understand the minutia of this film (there are books and documentaries exploring them), but it’s a great scary movie.
