High Life

High Life movie Still (2019)

“She says that this mission was like burying her twice and that my idea of glory was bullshit.”

Beautifully shot, provoking, and weird — it’s almost dreamlike, making me feel as though, just like the inhabitants of the vessel, we have no idea what month it is, let alone the day, and it’s in that mild delirium that this movie shines.

“I’ve been trained to compartmentalize. It seems to me that’s how I approach my life.”

Aside from the visuals and scope, it’s a little hard to believe this was made by the same auteur that made the Lost City of Z and The Immigrant; apparently ruined by studio interference, I would have loved to see the original vision as the core of this picture is incredible.

“There is no punchline.”

Wildly overrated, and nowhere near as controversial it’s producers and the press would like to believe, but it’s decently shot, and a refreshingly grounded take on a superhero movie.

The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse 3

“Yer fond of me lobster aint’ ye? I seen it — yer fond of me lobster!”

A surrealist period drama that captures your attention and doesn’t let it go, at once both realistically dull and utterly bizarre; far better than how much I enjoyed it.

“The hesitation in your voice, soon to be an echo in the recess in the spheres of retail.”

Sensual and chilling, Strickland packs in more visual beauty and scares into a story about a killer dress than most directors could, all while playing it straight; the soundtrack is sensational too.
