Martyrs

Martyrs Title Card

Martyrs Still

“Martyrs are exceptional people. They survive pain, they survive total deprivation. They bear all the sins of the earth. They give themselves up. They transcend themselves… they are transfigured.”

Existential gore, it’s utterly gross but with a redeeming story, the violence is humanised in a plot that necessitates it, even if it is hard to watch; creepy, solidly shot and acted, it’ll stay with you.

Puncture Still

“I bet you spent your whole life believing that you, you were born to do something great, make a difference, do something special. Important.  But Michael, it’s the most ordinary thought anybody ever had.”

A spectacular film, about how one small person can fight against something so much larger than himself, a true story and a heroin-infused inspiration.

A Few Good Men

A Few Good Men Still

“Walk softly and carry an armoured tank division, I always say.”

Christ, I love Aaron Sorkin; this movie has it all, great direction by Reiner, standout acting from Cruise and Nicholson, a fantastic script by Sorkin, it’s a damn masterpiece; one of the best legal dramas ever when Tom Cruise was at his charming and energetic best — a must-see.

Push

Push Title Card

Push Still

“Listen to me Nick. Someday a girl is going to give you a flower. You have to help her Nick. Help her, help us all.”

A really interesting film set it in a stunningly shot futuristic Hong Kong, where mutants can read the future, push (hey, that’s the name of the show) ideas into people’s heads, and use telekinesis to thwart their enemies; not a lasting film, but great to look at and with some good action.

The Losers

The Losers Title Card

The Losers Still

“I’m warning you, I am a lethal killing machine. It was a secret government experiment. They did stuff to me. Spooky stuff… Anal stuff. It turned me into a dangerous telekinetic.”

Dumb, but absurd amounts of fun and action, it’s self-aware and goofy enough to be a riot even if it never makes the most out of great actors like Chris Evans, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Idris Elba; if The Expendables is for your dad’s generation, this younger light-hearted take on a similar set-up is for you.
