Ant-Man

Ant-Man Title Card

Ant-Man Still

“No, I’m the Ant-Man!… I know, it wasn’t my idea.”

Such a dumb premise, tenuously held together; some of the miniaturisation and slow-mo type effects were great (as was Pena — a vastly underrated comedic actor), and Paul Rudd is charming and watchable, but this movie just couldn’t keep me interested.

JCVD Still

“Central to Unit 27. Jean-Claude Van Damme’s robbing a post office. I need back-up.”

A charming post-modern film, Jean-Claude plays a down on his luck version of himself who gets caught up in a bank heist; with flash backs to dramatised versions of real events in his life, and even breaks the fourth wall, it’s a really interesting and challenging movie, that while isn’t great makes for a compelling piece of cinema.

Burnt

Burnt Still

“I don’t want my restaurant to be a place where people sit and eat. I want people to sit at that table and be sick with longing.”

There was a truly great film within this concept, with a similar story and the same characters/actors, but this wasn’t it; several moments were fantastic, but most of the movie was a clichéd mess — but what a mess, I’m a sucker for a complicated-but-charming hero’s redemption story.

The Bourne Identity

The Bourne Identity Still

“Tell me who I am!”

A spy film for the modern age, it’s pretty great, ‘realistic’ and feels far closer to real tradecraft than most movies which makes it inherently interesting to me, but is horribly edited and has hideous shaky-cam that thankfully has mostly gone out of fashion.

★★★★✩

Knocked Up

Knocked Up Still

“Now that’s how you get pink eye.”

I like Apatow’s sense of humour (and work ethic), and Knocked Up is a great example of his line of thinking; crass but elegantly crafted, improvisational but meticulous — it’s a great film and a laugh-out-loud comedy.
