Pain & Gain

“I have no sympathy for people who squander their gifts. It’s sickening. It’s worse than sickening. It’s unpatriotic.”

This is Michael Bay‘s imitation of a Coen brother’s film and it works so much better than any of his Transformers movies — still with it’s flaws, but it’s consistently funny and well directed.

“Let me put it this way: I’m standing in front of a burning house, and I’m offering you fire insurance on it.”

A well-crafted and ‘accessible’ film about the market crash in 2008, it’s an all-round big-hitter with just enough star power to elevate a film about finance to the main stream, and wow is it done well — a must see.

Bridge of Spies

“What’s the next move when you don’t know what the game is?”

A delicate and humble film, shooting for realism as opposed to tense ‘spy’ shenanigans, there’s no huge set-pieces in this very human story of a prisoner exchange during the Cold War.

Creed

“Time takes everybody out; time’s undefeated.”

Not a patch on the original Rocky, but still a fun film with good performances from Jordan and Stallone, if this doesn’t get you pumped to go for a run and get in the gym, nothing will.

Gangster Squad

“The whole town’s underwater. You’re grabbing a bucket when you should be grabbing a bathing suit.”

A wet fart, completely over-stylised to the point it eats away at the story, there’s so much potential here and so many good ideas that just don’t add up to much at all.
