The Lobster Still

“He didn’t burst into tears and he didn’t think that the first thing most people do when they realise someone doesn’t love them anymore is cry.”

Incredibly good; a parable about love, loneliness, and the expectations of both, Lanthimos‘ style is the perfect mix between Wes Anderson’s kookiness and Anton Corbijn’s beautiful and tempered The American, wild and absurdist with such a delicate attention to detail and amazing world building despite doing so with no exposition it’s a miracle — easily my favourite movie of 2016 so far.

“People are strange creatures. You can’t always convince them that safety is in their best interest.”

An incredible small film — at least until the last ten minutes, which were good, but detracted from the rest — an impressive effort from Trachtenberg (who’s finally become a man), with some interesting shots and music choices that make this something special.

“We’re not keeping you here, you’re just staying.”

Incredible, a really well made slow burn film that takes place for the most part in one Neo-Nazi bar, it’s BRUTAL, if you ever thought you might be able to Jason Bourne a situation, this will be an eye opener, the violence is so swift and bloody it’ll knock you for six, even with it’s bittersweet ending.

“Dear Champion Vending Company: I put five quarters in your machine and proceeded to push B2, which should have given me peanut M&Ms. Regrettably, it did not. I found this upsetting, as I was very hungry, and also my wife had died ten minutes earlier.”

Jean-Marc Vallée’s look at loss and recovery is reaching for the stars with this, but it just didn’t quite click; it tries to tick too many boxes taking away from what could have been something as powerful as his previous film, Wild.

“I know who I am. I’m the dude playin’ the dude, disguised as another dude!”

I’d forgotten just how funny this movie is, the premise, the writing, and the acting is all gold  — Downey (in blackface) and Tom Cruise are especially good in this.
