The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train Title Card

The Girl on the Train Still

“I need to remember.”

Suffers in comparison to the somewhat similar Gone Girl, but this is smart and twisty (though with perhaps one too many), and Emily Blunt is of course wonderful as an utterly believable and compelling alcoholic.

“Unrequited love kills more people in the year than tuberculosis.”

This movie threaded the needle for me, I didn’t expect to like this at all, but the combination of a light touch from Woody, beautiful photography, and incredible acting made this love story and Golden Age Hollywood drama wonderfully entertaining.

“I am very seldom required to wear white by my employers. But, anyway, I always do. It has always been that wearing white reassures the sick that I can never be touched. Even as darkness folds in on them from every side, closing like a claw. “

Its monotone but incredible atmosphere building make for an intelligent film that doesn’t rely on jump-scares or tropes, but unfortunately doesn’t hit quite as hard as it should.

Hell or High Water

“I’ve been poor my whole life, like a disease passing from generation to generation. But not my boys, not anymore.”

Written by Taylor Sheridan, writer of one of my favourite movies, Sicario, and this didn’t disappoint; slow with with enough action and tension to keep everyone interested, it’s a morally complex classic.

“The old dogs hunt the best, sir.”

A really interesting premise with some wonderful and insightful touches, but felt like it didn’t have the confidence to go all the way.
