Children of Men

Children of Men Still

“Y’know that ringing in your ears? That ‘eeeeeeeeee’? That’s the sound of the ear cells dying, like their swan song. Once it’s gone you’ll never hear that frequency again. Enjoy it while it lasts.”

I never ‘got’ Children of Men, it’s ambitious, deep, well acted, and shot well, but just never grabbed me.

“Life is a game. So fight for survival and see if you’re worth it.”

A cult thriller, pitting kids against one-another in a fight to the death long before The Hunger Games, it’s soaring classical OST adds grandeur to this cynical wilderness filled to the brim with atmosphere and violence.

“Let’s go have a drink and smoke a cigarette.”

One of my favourite Wes Anderson’s films, I find his melancholic whimsy fits in perfectly here on the subcontinent where everything for us and these characters is new and a little odd, Anderson’s eccentricities are less egregious here than in most of his work; a fun meandering tale with soul.

Fight Club

“You’re not your job. You’re not how much money you have in the bank. You’re not the car you drive. You’re not the contents of your wallet. You’re not your fucking khakis. You’re the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.”

A life-changing movie, Fincher’s grottiest but still cold and beautiful, it’s an unsettling film about commercialism and independence and what it means to be men, a masterpiece, a must-see.

★★★★★

Inglourious Basterds

Inglourious Basterds Title Card

Inglourious Basterds Still

“You probably heard we ain’t in the prisoner-takin’ business; we in the killin’ Nazi business. And cousin, business is a-boomin’.”

Tarantino’s best, Inglourious Basterds focuses on a group of Nazi Hunters and a French cinema owner, who try to end the second world war; it manages to be both spectacle and intimate, devastating and funny, a brilliant film.
