The Way Way Back

The Way Way Back Still

“We have a situation over at Harpoon Lagoon.” “Is it a homicide?” “Yeah… It’s a homicide” “I knew this day would come.”

A really pleasant coming of age story, very funny; it’s about the importance of forging your own path and having fun while doing it, accepting yourself and not feeling the need to bow to other people’s expectations.

“The arrogance of men is thinking nature is in our control and not the other way around.”

I really didn’t like this movie, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a blank slate here and his character could more effectively been played by *anyone* else; no-one’s used effectively or empathetically, and despite some interesting directing and a really good intro credits sequence it couldn’t move the needle.

“I’m sick to fucking death of poor people!”

In theory an interesting film about the excessively rich and their hedonism, but as that increases so does their garishness and the feel-bad morality of the play comes to turn, after which it gets very dull very quickly.

“Fuck politics. We’re here. All the rest is bullshit.”

The least war-like war movie since Three Kings, it paints a very different picture of how most serving soldiers experienced war in the last forty years and feels very raw and real; it’s beautifully shot by Sam Mendes and doesn’t leave you — it’s even one of the few films I remember the trailer for, ten years later.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

“This isn’t the age of spies. This is not even the age of heroes. This is the age of miracles… and there’s nothing more horrifying than a miracle.”

The most interesting, funniest, and most engaging Avenger aside from Iron Man, this film is really enjoyable and so much better than Joss Whedon’s superhero blockbusters; and aside from Anthony Mackie who feels like he’s trying to edge in a conversation a group of strangers are having, I’m excited about the sequel with the same team behind the scenes.
