The East
"Why is it that self-righteousness always goes hand-in-hand with resistance movements?"
Brit Marling makes interesting choices and while they don't always pan out they involve topics that aren't being tackled by good filmmakers any more; but like the others it doesn't quite live up to the premise.
American Beauty
"It's a great thing when you realise you still have the ability to surprise yourself. Makes you wonder what else you can do that you've forgotten about."
Sharp writing and cinematography— every man feels empathy with Lester to some degree or another; it's small but sweeping, dark and complex and keeps me glued to the screen every time.
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
"All the gods, all the heavens & All the hells are within you."
More Call of Duty than Black Hawk Down, but fun and more restrained than Bay's typical fare.
Marie Antoinette
"Good luck and good work."
Incredibly original, blending extravagant period piece costumes and sets with a post-modern sensibility (and soundtrack) — Coppola knocks it out of the park, creating a delightful period piece that doesn't feel stuffy or laboured.
