Buried

Buried Title Card

Buried Still

“Your ransom video already has 47,000 hits on YouTube.”

Shot ONLY from the inside a plywood coffin, Buried is extremely claustrophobic with an incredible performance by Ryan Reynolds who is on screen for the full running time and who up until this point wasn’t known for his dramatic acting chops — it’s haunting and devastating and hard to shake especially if you’re not good with small spaces.

O Brother Where Art Thou?

“Damn! We’re in a tight spot!”

Based loosely on Homer’s Odyssey, this is a delightful film, shot in sepia tone, everything about it is charming and deliberate but with an easy-going Southern twang to it all — the older I get the more I love the Coen’s films, almost like I need more context to fully grasp their brilliance, and O Brother certainly improves dramatically every time I watch it.

“I worked in a stationary store. And I drove a snowplow. Fixed copiers.” “God, it’s such a shame that this whole ‘end of the world’ thing’s holding you back.”

Excellent, a favourite zombie movie of mine, exciting and action-packed, it’s got enough scares, laughs, and tense moments to satisfy just about everyone’s criteria.

Hard Candy

“This is what they make those federal laws for, Jeff. This is officially sick.”

A spectacular movie, made for less than a mil, but doesn’t look like it even though it plays out like the indiest of indie films, unforgiving, intelligent, and well acted, it’s a wonderful piece of cinema — if you haven’t seen it go in knowing nothing about it, not even the blurb, there’s a twist very early on that’s explosive if you don’t know.

Paper Towns

Paper Towns Still

“What a treacherous thing to believe that a person is more than a person.”

I’m a sucker for a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, hook line and sinker; Paper Towns takes that and twists the formula in a gut wrenching way making you realise a happy ending isn’t always the one you dreamt of and that life shouldn’t be something that just happens to you, all whilst remaining upbeat and endearing throughout.
