The Kid Detective

The Kid Detective Movie Title Card
The Kid Detective Movie Still

“It’s difficult to accept the difference between who you are in your head and who you are in the world.”

A completely sublime film that took me by surprise — a comedy noir with a wonderful premise (a kid detective that grows up and becomes a private eye in a one horse town); gleefully light yet made for grown-ups – the only quibble I can think of that lets it down is some tv-level cinematography.

“Bodecker believed that people were like dogs; once they start digging, they don’t wanna stop.”

Slow but builds magnificently, a little sloppily woven together, but overall a great and well told story that had me hooked from the start with some great performances (and several odd choices – Pattinson’s voice for example).

“”Respect keeps us safe.

A rather good war movie based on a true story, Caleb Landry Jones is excellent in this and while he may be the only one it’s solidly directed and a technical marvel with great camerawork that really makes you feel like you’re part of the action.

“You should choose carefully what you tell me, Ava. Because you can’t un-say it and I can’t un-hear it.”

Awful — bad writing, bad action, bad choreography, bad dialogue, bad motivation; the leads try their best but just can’t right this sinker — it’s only saving grace is John Malkovich’s (hilariously terrible) fight scene.

Sputnik (2020)

Sputnik (2020) 1

Interesting and well shot, Sputnik has a great first half but is let down by wild swings in character motivation and an unnecessary sub-plot at an orphanage — the tension surrounding the alien in the first half is brilliant though and makes this worth watching.
